With their playoff berth, the Yankees become the first AL team to compete in the postseason 2024.

The MLB postseason roster is beginning to take shape. The New York Yankees’ victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night (NYY 2, SEA 1 in 10 innings) guaranteed them a spot in the postseason. When the Milwaukee Brewers won the NL Central earlier in the day, they were the first team to guarantee a postseason spot. Out of the twelve playoff berths, two have been secured.
Anthony Rizzo’s walk-off RBI double in the eleventh inning secured New York’s postseason berth. Julio Rodríguez lost it on a swinging strike three in the bottom of the tenth, and he was picked at third when he veered too far from the bag to evade Randy Arozarena’s bat.
It’s crucial to remember that the Yankees have only guaranteed a postseason spot. Right now, they are guaranteed to be no worse than the third wild-card club. They need six Yankees victories and/or Baltimore Orioles defeats to secure the division, which is their magic number to win the AL East. The division may be secured by New York as early as this Saturday.
A postseason spot is just the first step towards the Yankees’ bigger objective. In addition to finishing with one of the two best records in the American League, which would earn them a bye into the Wild Card Series, they hope to win the AL East, which the Yankees haven’t won since 2022. The Yankees lead the AL in both stats (89-63), one and a half games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.
The Yankees finished 82-80 last year, which was their poorest record since they went 76-86 in 1992, their last losing season. In response, they acquired Juan Soto through trade during the offseason, and on Tuesday night, he blasted his 40th home run. The World Series was last won by the Yankees in 2009. They have an opportunity to break that streak in 2024 if they secure a postseason spot.
Next in line to secure a postseason berth are the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Guardians. On Thursday, they could all do so. Like the Yankees, those would only be postseason positions. Despite being in first place, all three clubs would still need to win their divisions.
