Since his promotion from Triple-A Las Vegas last July, Zack Gelof, playing second base for the Oakland Athletics, has quickly risen as one of MLB’s promising young talents and a key asset for the team’s future.

To further advance in his career, the 24-year-old looks up to specific players and incorporates elements of their game into his own.

During a recent segment of “All A’s” with NBC Sports California’s Brodie Brazil, Gelof revealed three MLB players he aims to emulate: DJ LeMahieu of the New York Yankees, Marcus Semien of the Texas Rangers, and Trea Turner of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Gelof’s selection of role models is logical, given that the trio comprises prominent infielders.

LeMahieu, Semien, and Turner boast a collective total of seven MLB All-Star selections and five Silver Slugger awards, establishing themselves as versatile players who excel both offensively and defensively, serving as enduring sources of inspiration for Gelof.

“DJ stands out as one of the premier hitters in the league, and as a tall infielder who has also clinched a Gold Glove,” Gelof remarked. “Then there’s Marcus Semien, who exhibits consistent improvement every day, a former member of the Athletics who has achieved remarkable success, including a World Series title. And Trea Turner, renowned for his seamless play on the field. I find that I perform at my best when I’m relaxed and agile, much like him.

“So, I endeavor to incorporate aspects of each of these players into my own game.”

These three luminaries have significantly influenced Gelof, who earned recognition as the AL Rookie of the Month in August, registering impressive statistics with a batting line of .286/.350/.562, along with eight doubles, seven home runs, and 15 RBI across 27 games.

However, Gelof holds Semien in particularly high regard as a symbol of Oakland and as a predecessor.

“Watching [Marcus] and his journey has been incredibly inspiring,” Gelof shared with Brazil. “His consistency is remarkable. To be able to show up day in and day out, giving your best for 160 games, that’s the epitome of a teammate. It’s a tremendous feat. I can’t fathom how Cal Ripken [Jr.] managed it for all those years.”

Except for the 2017 MLB season, during which Semien was sidelined for three months due to a broken right wrist, the six-year veteran infielder for the A’s participated in 97 percent of regular-season games, appearing in 688 out of a possible 708.

Now embarking on his inaugural full MLB season, Gelof aspires to emulate Semien’s reliability.

“Consistently showing up every day is something I aim to be recognized for,” Gelof affirmed.

While Gelof has encountered challenges at the start of the 2024 MLB season, posting a .261 on-base percentage, his determination and the influence of his role models suggest that he will soon regain his form and establish himself as a fixture in the lineup for years to come.
