Final of the Euro 2024: Spain defeats England to earn a thrilling, historic fourth title

In a thrilling Sunday Euro 2024 final, Spain defeated England 2-1, defying the tournament’s comeback kings and reclaiming the top spot in European soccer.

The game-winning goal was scored in the 86th minute by Mikel Oyarzabal, who came on as a second-half replacement and skillfully finished past English defenders and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
And the Spaniards, the clear champions of the competition, the talk of soccer circles, the leading storytellers, the top scorers, stormed to their fourth European championship.

They had previously defeated France and Germany. They were favorites to win a seventh straight game going into this thrilling final against an underachieving England club full of talent, having won six of their previous six games.

Their second half, which built to a crescendo, demonstrated why. It had been a cagey first forty-five minutes, brought almost to a standstill by England’s defensiveness. However, Spain let the second 45 burst into action.

They seized the lead in minute 47. Englishmen were swept aside as the Spanish wave flowed from right to left and then back to front. After Fabián Ruiz transferred the ball to Dani Carvajal, who flicked it to Lamine Yamal, Alvaro Morata and Dani Olmo came to life.

Their runs pulled Nico Williams, who was waiting patiently on the far side, away from John Stones and Kyle Walker, respectively, and toward the play.

Yamal singled out Williams, who broke English resistance with a single, forceful blow.

The objective embodied La Roja’s comeback. Two fun, young wingers named Williams and Yamal were the ones who turned a mediocre team into a winning one. Then Cole Palmer materialized out of nowhere.

Palmer, the cool-headed, slender, quiet star for Chelsea, came on in the seventieth minute. Suddenly, in the 73rd minute, he stroked a 20-yard shot past goalkeeper Unai Simón, through Spanish bodies, and into a net that England had barely even attempted to reach.
But the equalizer didn’t change the momentum; it was just a hiccup. Spain maintained its composure and continued to rise. Yamal tested Pickford, one day over his seventeenth birthday. After a short while, Oyarzabal defeated him, possibly winning by just a few inches.

And Spain became the first country to win four men’s European championships. It is arguable that Spain has shaped contemporary soccer more than any other country.
